We all know that engine oil helps to lubricate the moving parts of the engine for minimizing the friction and it also protects the metallic surface from corrosion.
We have experienced that engine oil alone cannot do these things. It needs some sort of a supplement which we call as an Engine oil additive.
But, does it helps to improve the car’s performance…?
The Engine Oil additives are the viscosity index improvers. In simple, they make the oil to freely flow through the car’s engine and coat all the parts that need coating.
Engine oil which is too thick won’t flow freely. It will stick to a specific area.
If the engine oil’s viscosity is too low, it will flow like water and won’t stick to the parts and lubricate them properly.
Much worse, the engine oil’s viscosity is also affected by the weather and the temperature of the engine. When cold, it becomes more viscous and when hot it becomes less viscous.
The Engine Oil Additives (viscosity index improvers) help to keep the oil’s viscosity balanced. So, whether you are starting your car on a winter morning, or the engine temperature is over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, it will keep the viscosity index in balance.
Well, there are some other types of oil additives.
1: Rust Inhibitors
They help to prevent the rust on different parts of the engine. It is quite common that when your car is running and if the engine oil’s quality is not good, the area around pistons is likely to suffer with rust. These additives contain zinc.
These helps to disperse the sludge that usually builds up in the engine over time.
As a car owner, whenever you are at an auto-shop, you might have been offered to buy an oil additive. So, is it really worth buying it? Does it improve the performance of your car and makes the engine healthy?
It’s pretty tough to answer as it is a controversial topic.
You may have bought a cheap engine oil that requires additives or it’s the car’s needs to add special additives. If this is the case, it will definitely improve the performance and keep the engine strong for a long time.
Based on my personal experience and having asked different car owners on various forums, we have concluded that “YES, Engine Oil Additives are Good for your Car Performance.” Even if it is not a requirement for your car to add the additive, it’s still safe to stack it with your regular engine oil.
Paying a few extra bucks for these additives will be a good decision.
